Civil Engineering - Dagenham Docks

Dagenham Docks
The contract for the reconstruction of infrastructure at Dagenham Docks was awarded on a design build arrangement with Clarke Bond as the design partner of contractor Birse Civils.
The site in East London, situated adjacent to the North bank of the River Thames, is to become a “sustainable industrial park” and is identified by the London Development Agency, central government and the Mayor of London as a strategically critical area of brownfield redevelopment for industrial relocation to facilitate the 2012 Olympic Games.
The project comprised of extensive drainage, utility and highway works including significant off-site utility upgrading to overcome the general shortage of electricity supply in the area.  In a parallel study, Clarke Bond investigated alternative energy sources to supplement the traditional cabled supply.
The quality of site - heavily contaminated from recent heavy industrial usage and its proximity to the river Thames - determined a high priority on maximising and recycling construction arisings from the site using in-situ and ex-situ treatment.
This, coupled with the need for long-term stability of the sewers led to Clarke Bond’s innovative solution - effectively hanging the drainage beneath the concrete pavement in geo-grid sling.
This solution (adopted by Thames Water) was developed through extensive research and calculations and collaboration with manufacturers.
Qualitative risk assessments secured an exemption of 50,000m3 under the Waste Management Regulations, relocating arisings to adjacent designate sites as opposed to landfill.
